I found this program, backWeb-7288971.exe, running in the
background when I did a <ctrl><alt><del>. I had been
forced to use <ctrl><alt><del> because the systen had
started acting erratic.

I ran a find files or folders, located the file and sent
it to the recycle bin, but now every time the system
starts up it is looking for the exe file.

I tried searching the knowledge base on microsoft's web
site, but didn't find the file listed. I also looked in
my startup and don't see it as an executable there. I
check McAfee and don't see any virus there by that name.
But it seems my system acts flaky whenever it is running.

My question is this or is this not a microsoft file name?
If not any ideas out there as to what application might
use it? And if the file is in the registery specifics on
how to get rid of it if necessary?

Nope, it's not a Microsoft file, it's actually spyware.

All of the following are freeware and should be able to get rid of it for
you.

Spybot Search & Destroy

Spyware Blaster / Spyware Guard

Ad-Aware

First, restore the backWeb-7288971.exe file from the Recycle Bin to where it was before.
It is not a virus, nor is it a Microsoft file. It is a backweb app used by some software and also by some computer manufacturers, to update from the web, while running in the background. Backweb apps can interfere with your web browsing, and I always uninstall them or disable them through the program's options, if available. Just deleting the file is not how to do it.

Please supply the exact path to the backweb file (probably somewhere in the Program Files tree, in Windows Explorer).

What brand computer do you have? Compaq and Hewlett Packard are two companies that use a backweb app for background updates. One software that uses it is Kodak (Kodak Software Updater). IIRC, Kodak give instructions for removing it, in the 'read me' files for the app.

If you are using a brand of computer that has a backweb updater factory-installed, first press Ctrl+Alt+delete, and end Task on the backweb app, then go to Control Panel> Add\Remove Programs and uninstall it. It may not be listed as "BackWeb"....instead the entry may be something like HP Software Updates, or Web Updates, or similar. Post back with what you find in Add\Remove Programs, and we may spot it for you.
